Nuclear Medicine

This technique uses a very low dose of a radioactive agent which is taken up and used by the body’s metabolism to reveal bodily function with the agent broken down naturally by the body usually within minutes to hours before it is excreted.

PET CT Scanning

An infrequently available imaging modality most commonly used to assess tumour activity.  A low dose rapidly ‘decaying’ radioactive substance simulating a body metabolite (eg 18F-deoxyglucose [FDG] acting like glucose or PSMA, a biomarker for prostate cancer) is taken up by metabolising cells.  Cancer cells typically take up such agents ‘avidly’ and the cancer activity including spread and treatment response can be assessed.

Patient Leaflets

FDG PET CT General

The scan uses X-ray technology together with a radioactive tracer to create a 3D picture of the inside of the body. Theis produces a detailed picture of the internal anatomy and function.

FDG PET CT Heart Scan

The scan uses X-ray technology together with a radioactive tracer to create a 3D picture of the inside of the body. Theis produces a detailed picture of the internal anatomy and function.

PSMA Scan

The scan uses X-ray technology together with a radioactive tracer to create a 3D picture of the inside of the body. Theis produces a detailed picture of the internal anatomy and function.

Lymphoscintigram

The lymphoscintigram is used to investigate the lymph nodes and lymphatic system. It involves injections into your feet with a small amount of radioactive tracer.

Melanoma Sentinel Node Scan

A sentinel node scan is a test used to find and mark where your lymph nodes are. We will inject a small amount of radioactive tracer around the melanoma.

MUGA Heart Scan

we will give you two injections, into a vein situated in your arm or the back of your hand. These are: 1. A stannous dose to activate your red blood cells. 2. A radioactive tracer

DMSA Kidney Scan

The injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer into a vein in your arm or the back of your hand. it collects in the kidneys and then looked at with a camera.

Renogram Study

Studies the function of the kidneys. It is a safe and simple test, which will help the physician make a diagnosis. It involves an injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer into a vein in your arm.

DAT Brain Scan

injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer into a vein in your arm or the back of your hand. it collects in the brain then looked at with a camera.

Bone Scan

The radioactive tracer is injected, it circulates in the blood and temporarily collects in the bones. It is then detected from outside the body using a special camera, and a picture, known as a scan, will be done.

Dual Phase Parathyroid Scan

We will place a needle into a vein in your arm or the back of your hand. Through this needle a slightly radioactive tracer will be administered. We will take pictures of your neck 10 minutes and 1.5 - 2 hours after the injection. Please allow approximately 3.5 – 4 hours for the process.

Gastric Emptying Study

A scan will show the rate at which your food or drink leaves your stomach. We will ask you to eat a portion of porridge mixed with a small amount of radioactivity. We will then ask you to sit in a semi recumbent position for a period of 90 minutes whilst pictures of your stomach are taken by a gamma camera

Glomerular Filtration Test

A test that measures the glomerular filtration rate of your kidneys. We will inject a small amount of radioactivity (99m Tc DTPA) into a vein in your arm or the back of your hand and then take blood samples 2, 3, and 4 hours after the injection

Hida Scan

The scan will show the transit of bile through the liver, gallbladder and small intestine. You will be injected with a small amount of radioactivity into a vein in your arm or the back of your hand. A picture of your abdomen will be taken using a special machine called a gamma camera.

Breast Sentinel Node Scan

A sentinel node scan is a test used to find and mark where your lymph nodes are. A tracer circulates in the blood and temporarily collects in the lymph nodes

SeHCAT Scan

A test to see how well your digestive system is performing at absorbing bile salts.
